SCORPIO-N

           



The Big Daddy has arrived! Yes, you read right, it is non other than the all new Mahindra Scorpio-N. Mahindra calls it as Big Daddy of all SUVs. Is it really worth for the title Big Daddy? Let's check it out what's in it.

The new Scorpio is from the Body on Frame platform. Mahindra calls it as a global SUV. Now it is longer, wider and larger in wheel base than the regular Scorpio Classic. However it is shorter in height than the Classic Scorpio.

Dimension: 4662mm L x 1917mm W x 1857mm H

Wheelbase: 2750m.

The Scorpio-N available in Z2,Z4,Z6,Z8 & Z8L variants.

At the front you can find a beautiful and bold Mahindra's signature grill with chrome finished slats on it. Mahindra logo placed on it looks beautiful.

The SUV comes with Dual LED projector head lamps with sequential turn indicator. At the down side of the bumper we can see the LED fog lamps with C-shaped DRLs. There is a large air dam and a skid plate on the bumper,which elevates the SUV look of the car.

From sides you can notice the massive 18inch alloy wheels and big wheel arches of the Scorpio. A long foot board is provided to step inside the cabin. Windows are wide and are underlined in chrome.

Strong shoulder line makes it muscular from sides. ORVMs are body coloured and turn indicators are integrated on it. Door handles are in chrome finish. Scorpio's roof rails are also looking attractive from sides. Thus from sides, it is a long and muscular SUV.

When comes to rear, you can see the long vertical tail lamps on both sides of the boot door, which looks beautiful. A rear wiper is provided. It's tail gate is very large and it opens outwards. Boot space is very minimal when the third row seats are in upright, but it can be increased by folding the third row seats. A spare wheel is provided underneath the car. Overall, the SUV looks good from rear.

Interior

By entering into the cabin you can feel the premiumness of the car. It is the modern, upmarket and very futuristic cabin.It has Rich-Coffee black leatherette interior. The seats are well contoured and  perforated but there is no ventilated seats on offer. 

Interior front

There is an 8 inch touch screen infotainment system on the centre console, having Mahindra AdrenoX connectivity feature. With this you can remotely operate the car from your mobile. It has Alexa connectivity too. This system also supports wireless Android auto and Apple Carplay (wired). It has 12 speaker 3D surround sound system from Sony which provides excellent sound quality inside the cabin.

Switches provided under the infotainment system are very nice. Touch and feel of these switches are very good.

Two cup holders are provided at the centre (only one in automatic variants). There is small storage space under the front arm-rest. Bottle holders are provided on all four doors. A single pane sun-roof is provided. Steering wheel and gear lever are leather wrapped. Volume control and cruise control switches are provided on the steering wheel. Start/stop switch is also provided in this SUV.

There is an 8 inch screen on the meter console,which provides all the vehicle related information and it can also be used as navigation display. Grab handles provided on both A pillars enhances the SUV style of the vehicle from inside.

Driver seat can be adjusted electrically in 6 ways whereas the steering wheel can be adjusted manually for tilt function only. No telescopic adjustment is there in any variant. Two USB chargers and a wireless mobile charging pad are provided at front. The vehicle comes with dual zone A/c. There is camera on front and rear of the car. 

Even though the Scorpio is feature-rich, this  SUV lacks some good and useful features like Auto dimming mirror, telescopic adjustment on steering wheel, ventilated seats and 360 degree camera.

We can feel the height of the car from second row too. You will get very good leg,shoulder and head room in this row. Long windows providing good outside view and more brightness inside the cabin. There are two A/c vents with blower control and a Type C USB charger is also provided in the A/c vents.

The second row seats are available in two configurations-Two captain seat and bench seat configurations. The bench seat having a centre arm rest with two cup holders on it. 

To enter into the third row we have to tumble the second row seat from the left side of the car. This seat have a one touch tumble function. By entering into the third row you feel it very cramped. This row is ideal or best fit for children under 10 year old.

Drivability

This rear wheel drive vehicle have very refined petrol and diesel engines on offer. The mStallion turbo-petrol  engine produces 203Hp power. It is a very quick engine and responds well with both the automatic and manual gear boxes. But this engine is available with 2 wheel drive variants only. 

Diesel engine comes with two state of tuning. The lower variants get 131 Bhp power and the upper variants will be rewarded with 175Bhp. Power comes in linear manner. There are three driving modes provided in 2WD variants. They are Zip,Zap & Zoom.
  • Zip mode can be used to get more fuel efficiency.
  • Zap mode is to drive in city driving.
  • Zap mode is for more enthusiastic drive on highways.
Creep function in automatic variants works well in city driving conditions. Now with the updated engines and gear box set up the car feels more stable on highway speeds. Now it gives confidence  on corners. With the improved suspension set up you feel less bouncy on rear seats. Cabin insulation is excellent, tyre and road noise are well contained. As it is a ladder on frame SUV the body roll is evident, but is minimal when compare to the size and ground clearance of the vehicle.

Four wheel drive variants-Z8 and Z8L comes with 4XPLOR Intelligent 4X4 system with selectable Terrain Modes (Normal, Snow, Mud & Ruts, Sand). This system makes this SUV a perfect off-roader.

Engine Specifications.

Petrol Engine:The 2.0L mStallion Turbo-Petrol engine produces max.power of 149.14kW@5000r/min and the Max. Torque of 370Nm@1750-3000r/min in Manual variant and 380Nm@1750-3000 r/min in Automatic variants.

Diesel Engine:The new 2.2L mHawk GenII Diesel engine produces the Max. Power of 128.6kW@3500r/min in upper variants and 97kW@3750r/min in lower variants. The upper Automatic variants  produces Max. Torque of 400Nm@1750-2750r/min and 370Nm@1500-3000r/min by Manual variants whereas the lower manual variants (Z2&Z4) produces Max. Torque of 300Nm@1500-3000r/min.

Safety: The Scorpio comes with host of safety features. ESC, Hill-Hold Assist, Hill-DecentControl,Roll-Over Mitigation, Driver Drowsiness Detection,ABS+EBD, Parking sensor, 6 airbags,TPMS, Disc brakes on all wheels and many more. You can check the full details from the Mahindra's website.

Recenty the Scorpio-N has received 5 Star rating for Adult occupant and 3 star rating for Child occupant safety from GNCAP.

The new Scorpio is a very long and massive SUV. It is safe and feature rich, it is modern and convenient. It is very powerful. It can handle any terrain with ease. With all these qualities it becomes a Big Daddy, yes it is the Big Daddy of all SUVs.

Definitely you can consider this world class SUV if you are in the budget range between 12 and 25 Lakh Rupees. It is a great SUV in all sense.
